My take on Hamilton the musical

My favorite song of the musical was burn sung by Eliza. I liked the song because here was the first time in my opinion that we really got to see the emotions of Eliza. The amount of pain in her voice was really telling of how the character felt at that moment. It also brought out feelings that she’s had for a while about Hamilton. what stood out the most was:

You and your words obsessed with your legacy
Your sentences border on senseless
And you are paranoid in every paragraph
How they perceive you

that spoke to me because here she is realizing just how much of a narcissist Hamilton was. Unable to see how his actions may have affected his family, he ended up tearing them apart.

I would describe Hamilton as both a comedy and tragedy. I feel the story itself is a tragedy but the play was comedic. For example, the British king was one of the funniest characters in the play, and their rap battles on how to build the government were funny as well. The tragedy for me mainly shows in the relationship between Hamilton and Eliza. Since Hamilton didn’t really know what it was like to love or be loved he wasn’t able to give that to Eliza who was full of love. Hamilton had a mission and as Eliza stated throughout the play it seemed like he was “writing like he’s running out of time”. It was sad to see how emotionless he was and he couldn’t see what was in front of him this whole time. Towards the end when his son died in a duel was pretty tragic too because it seemed in the beginning that Hamilton didn’t want to have a repeat of his past and he ended up repeating it. He wasn’t there much for his son and sadly ended in Hamilton seeing another death of a family member.

Aaron Burr intrigued me because he made me want to know more about him. He said he had the same values as Hamilton but was always too afraid to speak up about them. He also never really explained what he would’ve liked to see in government so we as the audience never got to see if he had good policies or not. He wasn’t my favorite character because I’m not a huge fan of jealousy but it made me wonder why was he kept projecting his insecurities onto Hamilton instead of learning from him. He definitely had a fixed mindset and it turned him into a murder in the end.
